Edwards Accelerated Reader

“EAR” – just what is it?  “EAR” stands for the Edwards Avid Reader program.  “EAR” is an individualized reading program that allows each student to read at his/her own pace and level of ability.  Children may participate in the program by reading on their own or being read to.  Here’s how it works.  Children choose a book from a list of carefully selected books.  Each book has been evaluated as to reading level and length.  Based on these factors, each book has been assigned a point value.  After reading the book or having it read to them, children take a computerized test in library.  This test measures comprehension.  Points received are based on the point value of the book and the student’s score on the test.  In the library, these books are labeled EAR in red along with the book’s point value.  Books may come from the school library, the child’s classroom, home, a friend, or the public library.  Children in grades 2 thru 5 take part in the program all year.  Many of the classroom teachers encourage/require “EAR” tests as part of their curriculum.  First graders begin the program in mid-January.

The “EAR” program keeps track of students’ performance.  Every couple of months, the “EAR” store is opened to allow the children to “spend” their accumulated points.  Small toys, school supplies, Beanie Babies, and outside toys are just a few of the items available for purchase.  Each point earned is worth $.10.

Reading points are the most objective way to measure reading progress.  Students must practice in order to improve their reading ability.  By working together, parents/guardians, students, and the school can promote and encourage reading.  As children become better readers, studies show that they become better students.  Parents/guardians are the key motivators and are essential to the success of the “EAR” program.

“EAR” Family Reading Nights are held approximately twice a month.  These evenings offer additional opportunities for children to take “EAR” tests.  They also provide a time for families to come together and read.

These nights happen on different days of the week to try and accommodate many different and busy schedules.

Please join us in the school library/computer room on any of the following nights.  We are here from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm.  Come for a few minutes or two hours – the choice is yours.
